Context
The Last Artifact is an ambitious and unique project: it's about creating an original adventure video game using Minecraft as the engine, within a non-profit game studio.
Created using the studio's own open-source tool, the game aims to offer content that is unusual for Minecraft in order to distinguish it as a unique game. This includes cutscenes, voice acting for the 80 characters, original soundtracks, custom 3D models, and homemade animations, all running on the base Minecraft without any add-ons.
The Last Artifact is still under development and will be made available for free to all Minecraft players once completed.

I participated in TLA as a Combat Designer. My main missions were to design the game's creatures and player equipment in order to achieve a satisfying combat experience that was richer than that of basic Minecraft.
Boss
-
Vorocko, Rooks Leader

Vorocko is the very first boss encountered by the player in The Last Artifact.
With the narrative framework for this character and the fight already written, I was able to design its gameplay portion based on concrete elements. I decided to create a boss with three distinct phases in order to maintain a consistent pace, a varied fight, and to be able to include dialogue when his health is low, between his second and third phases.

Phase 1
The first phase begins immediately after the introductory dialogue, in which Vorocko challenges Valar to a duel after the latter has killed several members of the Rooks. This phase is fought primarily in close combat so that the player can try out the various special melee weapons they obtained before entering this fight.

Bossfight Phase 1
Skills:
-
Normal Attack:
Vorocko tries to hit the player with his daggers.
-
Special Attack:
Every 5 seconds, Vorocko will throw gravel blocks in front of him with his shovel and bury a bomb which will explode if the player is within a 2-block radius around it, if he attacks it or if 15 seconds have passed.
-
Passive Ability:
When the player is 6 or more blocks away from Vorocko, he will leap to get closer quickly.
-
Phase 2
The second phase is triggered when Vorocko's HP reaches 60%. As a transition from phase 1 to phase 2, Vorocko jumps and hangs from one hand above the arena. This phase is designed to be played by looking up and down alternatively, requiring the player to move differently to dodge, and to use the various ranged attacks available to them.

Bossfight Phase 2
Skills:
-
Special Attack:
Every 5 seconds, Vorocko will throw several bombs, previously indicated by a ground target VFX. One of them is aimed at the player specifically, the others are distributed randomly.
-
Phase 3
The third phase is triggered when Vorocko's HP reaches 30%. Vorocko goes back on the ground and a dialogue begins, followed by the final part of the fight. This final phase makes Vorocko vulnerable to melee attacks again and is the ultimate test of the player's agility, with the terrain being partially covered in flames and Vorocko being faster.

Bossfight Phase 3
Skills:
-
Normal Attack:
Vorocko tries to hit the player with his daggers.
-
Special Attack:
Every 5 seconds, Vorocko will use his shovel to send a firebomb at the player. The bomb will explode upon contact with the player or the ground, creating a large area of flames (~7 blocks diameter) that will limit the combat area for a while.
-
Passive Ability:
Vorocko moves twice as fast during this phase.
-
Arena
The arena where Vorocko is fought was also designed to make this bossfight truly unique. The features below are written as originally envisioned, but may differ in the final version of the game.

Vorocko Arena Prototype
Features:
-
Circular boundary (~20 blocks diameter) formed by impassable bandits cheering on Vorocko (crowd atmosphere, crowd reactions depending on the progress of the fight).
-
Has an elevated hook (12 blocks) in the center for Vorocko to hang on to.
-
The ground is made out of diggable materials which will allow Vorocko to throw some of it with his shovel and bury bombs
-
The ground is flat so both the player and boss do not need to jump in combat.
